Located in Kohuwela, Sri Lanka, the site is nearly 100 feet square in area. Constrained for space with limitations of 10 foot setbacks in the front and the rear, the house has been designed and built on a building footprint of less than 60 feet square. The house consists of four bedrooms with attached bathrooms, a pantry and a kitchen, an open plan living/ dining area, a tv room, and rooftop terrace. There are private terraces in each room that are combined into the bedrooms, giving further extension to the space.
The design utilizes maximum natural light and ventilation achieved through the use of sliding glass windows, louvers, and a central stairwell core that acts as a climate moderator, releasing warmer air from the lower levels through the rooftop level thus continuously cooling the building.
The materials used are dark hues of kumbuk and teak, cement floors, and the toned greys of the louvers and windows against the backdrop of white walls, contributing to the dual concept of the minimal and ostentatious. The residence is an elegant example of a contemporary space that has transcended programmatic requirements in a manner that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
