The project was carried out as a joint venture of Volker Thun Architect and architektur:zwingel/dilg The site faces a communal square in a classic residential area of Munich, Bavaria. The clients, two sisters and their families, had shared a small house on that same plot. The two have always appreciated the joint aspects of sharing the joys and chores of daily life, but at a certain point they realised their need for more space and ‚room of one‘s own‘.Hence the theme ‚gemeinschaft‘ played a vivid part from early conversations on, as well as a certain amount of autonomy was favored.
Alternatively to the conventional semi-detached house we therefore envisioned two seperate volumes, which although they take on size and roof slopes of the neighbouring dwellings show a certain distinctiveness yet at the same time work well as a ensemble through it‘s angle-shaped overall layout. The peculiar wall and roof cladding made of corrugated fibre cement board definitely supports this intention. The shared entrance yard with its wide steps tempts the odd hang out and is an attractive play area for the kids. All ground level living spaces are entered from the mutual entrance area and open up towards the more introverted garden. And we picked up on our client‘s love for colour designing a simple but strong colour concept.
