This site was the residual space of a triangle, located at the edge of an old residential areas and a new residential area, a 10 minute walk from Ise Nakagawa Station in the south part of Mie Prefecture. On the site, there are rice fields on the north side, a park at the south, a high-volume road to the east, and a vegetable garden on the west side, with an open space at the perimeter. The concept was to create a sculptural architecture that takes advantage of the triangular site.
The house could not be fully open on the south side because of the lack of privacy from the nearby park. Therefore, by shaping the building as a "boomerang,” a semi-private courtyard was created. Part of the building was shaved off diagonally from the south so that light could enter on the north side and to the courtyard. As the house bends, the floor plan gradually changes to a double height.
