For a vast plot of 2,100 sq.ft area, situated next to a beach in a small local town in Liberia, a Mumbai-based architectural firm, Atelier ARBO was approached to design a three storey residential apartment building for the client. A comprehensive and specific set of requirements, provided by the client, led to the exploration of unique architectural elements beautifully complementing the surrounding natural landscape.
With a population of over 50 lakh people, Liberia, a country in West Africa, is known for being the abode of lush rainforests, tropical birds, and scenic beaches. The design revolved around creating spaces that seamlessly blend and communicate with the tropical climate and the natural beauty of the surrounding context. Aligning with the project brief, the apartment building hosts a ground floor area dedicated to social community events, a separate residential unit for renting out, and a personal residence for the client and his family.
An open, flexible, and multifunctional space inviting residents for intimate gatherings and social functions makes up the ground floor area. Open plan concept amalgamates with modern architectural principles to create an optimal spatial arrangement.
An elegant abode, meant to be rented out, can comfortably accommodate a family of four to five members on the first floor of the apartment building. A conscious planning approach is reflected in the spatial segregation of different zones. The common spaces of the house face the south-west direction to take in abundant daylight and natural ventilation, whereas the private spaces overlook the north-east direction to take in the tender sun rays and a cool breeze at dawn.
A spacious and mindfully planned residence becomes the personal home of the client and his family, on the second and the third floor of the apartment building. Keeping the comfort of a large family in mind, the house has spacious living areas, one master suite and three bedrooms with attached bathrooms, and multiple recreational spaces. With an intent to create interesting and playful interior spaces, the living area has been designed to have a double height and a circular staircase becomes the central focal point of the house.
The intriguing arrangement of the interior spaces, creating interesting levels, enhances the overall feel, effectively complementing the simplistic rectangular layout of the building. Spatial configuration is mapped out in such a way that the private and the common spaces of the house seamlessly correlate with each other, leading to increased interactions and conversations between the residents. The use of large glazed fenestrations allows abundant diffused daylight to flood every internal space of the house. Thoughtful planning of large windows and balconies facilitates cross ventilation allowing the refreshing coastal breeze to flow through the house.
The external facade adorns a pleasing blend of traditional brick and modern plastered concrete - a combination that aesthetically merges with the surrounding context of the building. Exuding a soft, monochromatic, and subdued appearance, the structure creates an aura of peace and comfort. A striking roof form becomes the overhead cover for the terrace of the building, where people can walk and interact with each other.
Incorporation of various large fenestrations, balconies, and garden pockets smoothly connect the interior spaces with the scenic views of the natural landscape. A perforated brick facade covers the stairwell enhancing the ventilation of the space, while also highlighting the verticality of the four storeyed structure. The undulating form of the roof sets the building a class apart from the neighboring residences.
Exploring various design interventions and strategies led to the creation of a warm, welcoming, and efficient residential abode. The tactful spatial configuration and material combination is a testament to how strategically designed spaces can lead to an enhanced living experience.
