Across the central station of Amsterdam lies this beautiful monumental building from the 17th
century. The building, already functioning as a hotel, was in a bad condition and the furnishing
was very outdated. Studio Bower got the assignment to design the new interior and identity of
this boutique hotel.
“The renovation of hotel Plant was a tremendous challenge. The client wanted to keep the
heritage of the building intact (as much as possible). In addition, the client's wish was to create as
many rooms as possible, this would mean more rentable space. This was quite a challenge due to
the existing frameworks of the building. The basement was deepened further and the attic floor
was brought back to its original state. With that we accomplished to create 27 rooms divided over
7 floors.”
“Every single room in this hotel is different. Making drawings and details for every room would
be very labour intensive and our client wanted to open his hotel as soon as possible. Therefore we
had to rethink our design process. Our goal was to create a coherent and beautiful identity. To
make that feasible we had to set up design principles that you could be used for every room. In
this way, we were able to establish a coherent identity in a short space of time.”
