Transforming an abandoned seven-story office building into a hotel in an area surrounded by towering contemporary structures was one of the most significant challenges in this project. Instead of competing with the predominant features of the area—tempered glass facades, immaculate finishes, and aluminum louvers—we decided to design "that small, charming, and cozy hotel" that stands out for its authenticity and warmth, breaking away from the stereotypes of its surroundings.
Our proposal focused on a facade that, instead of following the light, sleek aesthetic of the neighboring buildings, presented a sequence of solid openings and frames distributed randomly. This deliberately heavy design in terms of materials not only preserves the hotel's presence but also distinguishes it among the towering skyscrapers. The warmth and solidity of our approach are also reflected in the interiors, where we opted for open ceilings in the reception area, creating a welcoming atmosphere rather than a cold, minimalist one.
The rehabilitation of the vertical circulation core was another key element of the project. The original staircase was preserved and elegantly revamped with a dark skin that contrasts with the building's lightness. Additionally, vines and cables descend from the top of the building to the lobby, bringing life to the common areas, crowned by lights that illuminate the space and reinforce the warmth we sought.
The bathroom design also reflects this duality. While the hotel's exterior is robust and dark, the bathrooms feature clean and refined finishes, as if they were the negative of the dark brick exterior, offering a fresh and relaxing experience within a space that feels solid and protected.
Hotel Fulton is defined by its uniqueness and its effortless ability to stand out in an architectural context where visual competition is strong. Far from following established norms, its design makes it a refuge that responds rebelliously and antagonistically to its surroundings, making it a symbol of authenticity and character amidst the modernity that surrounds it.
