PROJECT REQUIREMENTS:

Rehabilitate a derelict residential hotel and first floor commercial building in deteriorated San Pedro, CA neighborhood. Create 39 units of single room occupancy housing with related support and community spaces for some of the area’s most profoundly poor and homeless population, many of whom have mental disabilities.

PROJECT SOLUTION:

The original double loaded configured floor plan of the three story brick building was abandoned and replaced with a new single loaded courtyard scheme. Also, the interior courtyard was opened to both the sky and the formerly commercial first floor.

All the new units, as well as community kitchens and support spaces, focus into this light filled, unifying outdoor space. Each unit is designed with a private bathroom and a view off the property. The image is intended to recall a “Retired Seaman’s Hotel.”

Year Completed: 1999
