Transforming a hurricane-damaged casino into a premier venue involved constructing a new single-story casino addition and refurbishing the existing facility. The project encompassed upgraded interiors, enhanced gaming spaces, and hardscape improvements.
The manufacturer played a pivotal role, providing interior ceilings that extended into the porte-cochère, featuring a captivating ribbon design. The manufacturer’s contribution also included engineered soffits and column claddings designed to withstand the challenging wind loads associated with hurricanes.
The ceiling design not only captivates with its visual impact but also ensures accessibility for maintenance. A significant design challenge was ensuring point accessibility for plenum access while maintaining the seamless appearance of the ribbons as well as meeting hurricane wind-load requirements. The manufacturer custom-engineered the ceiling, utilizing their award-winning system to provide point accessibility and the ability to withstand the specified wind loads. The design team was extremely happy with the system and complemented the manufacturer on their recommendation.
The soffit and fascia panels, constructed from heavy-duty aluminum, were designed to meet wind-load requirements. The contrasting colors of the soffit and fascia panels created a framing effect, enhancing the artistic ceilings within. Tapered column enclosures at the entrance contribute to the overall visual appearance of balance and stability of the grand structure.
Detailed shop drawings were created by the manufacturer and submitted for approval by the design team. Factory mock-ups were a crucial step, providing a proof-of-design for the manufactured prototypes and assemblies. The emphasis was placed on achieving seamless design transitions. In addition, the construction team requested design-assist services from the manufacturer to develop comprehensive 3-D models for M.E.P. device placement, spatial coordination, and clash detection. The ceiling, soffits, and column cover models were verified against a data point cloud model produced by surveying the physical project site with 3-D laser scanning technology. This approach enabled the project team to approve the production of project scopes prior to the completion of the building frame construction.
Production challenges for the ribbon ceiling included ensuring the free flow of the ribbons as per the design. The ribbons accentuating the ceiling are crafted from extruded aluminum profiles that were factory-curved. Each curved section was meticulously checked against templates to ensure precision matching with the drawings. Sections of the ribbons were then factory-fastened to ceiling panels, with rigorous quality checks to ensure continuity from panel to panel. To ensure longevity, the ceilings, soffits, and column covers were factory powder-coated in high-performance AAMA 2605 finishes.
Job site challenges were faced with the installation of scopes that included cladding on rooftop parapet walls, requiring teams to ascend the scaffolding and transport individual heavy-duty panels from floor level to the final point of installation. Coordination among trades was crucial for maintaining precise lighting and electrical layouts.
The outcome is a distinctive design that has a unique aesthetic appeal, which undoubtedly makes it a focal point of the casino. The project’s intricacies in engineering, production, and installation make it deserving of a 2024 CISCA Construction Excellence Award.
