Our thoughtful remodelling of this tired 1970’s reverse plan house responds and reflects the changing lifestyle of the modern family. We have created a light filled, energy efficient broken plan space with nooks, corners and sun decks, providing our family of six the ability to find privacy, a quiet place to relax, read or play piano, whilst still being part of the cave like quality of space carved from the existing volume perched on the eastern edge of the escarpment of Fort George. The eastern and southern walls of the upper floor have been removed to expose the cave like space to the warmth of the morning sunrise and views over the valley and beyond towards the horizon, enhancing both retreat and prospect within this new exemplar home. The house works in two ways, one as a single storey bungalow for the married couple, then when the growing kids or guests return, the lower ground floor bedroom wing, can be easily opened up to expand the house from a 1 bed single storey bungalow to a multi-generational 5 bedroom 2 storey family home.
