the hop-umbrellas are living floralinstallations, woven out of willow and hop. they were
designed for the 675. city jubilee of the medieval city of Seßlach in Bavaria -
Germany.
the small town, with app. 1300 inhabitans, were looking for
culural frame for it’s celebrations, wich take place the howle year. I decide to design objects which create abode on a public
square without any offer of abidanceand combine 3 important topics of the jubilee: the past, the future and
the community.
with the help of the inhabitans and professional basket
makers we woven three umbrellas (3 meters high, roof size 5x5 m) on a
steel-substructure. bags with soil inside of the column get 5 small hop-plants,
which will grow out of the workmanship surface, thus the installation will
change every day (hop can grow 20 cm / day). the materials were traditional
crops of the region. the hop is an important ingredient of the bavarian beer
and the willow was used for the basket-manufacture.
the objects form new space with a historical backdrop now and
were used for different activities. every weekend the taverns of the ambience
will feast guest in the light shadow of the floral roof. in addition there will be also
traditional farmer markets and concerts under it to.after the jubilee the objects will build up again as landmarks in front of the city.more pictures and information in german language http://www.martinlersch.de/wordpress/objekt/hopfenschirme/
