The Honey Bees Language Club is a kindergarten set in an old Industrial Estate in Mumbai. The estate has a mix use identity ranging from industrial workshops to recording studios to commercial offices. The kindergarten is designed as a soft insert nestled in a multi level high ceiling industrial unit to foster a learning environment for children from 3 to 6 years. Smooth curvilinear sweeps demarcate the program and accentuated flow of the spaces in contrast to the hard, sharp edges of the estate.
Natural light is brought in to the space through two sources: an oval skylight over the staircase void at the entrance that acts like a lantern to light the inner section of the site and a double storied louvered window towards the external facade of the estate. The louvres are angled away from the harsh south west and staggered for diffused light in the interior spaces. Spaces are open and visible through transparent screens.
The staircase and lobby sweeps integrate the spaces both in plan and in section. The staircases from the ground to first and first to second are staggered to create a expanding void opening toward the skylight to maximise the light entering the volume. The first to second level staircase peels off from the extruded ovoid shaft of the lower stair to form the accentuated railing of the overlooking second floor.
There are 5 classrooms on the ground level, 3 classrooms and the teachers discussion area on the first level and the storage and pantry on the second level. Spaces are flexible to form smaller activity and concept rooms to larger performance spaces.
