Low-rise residential development along a Norwegian fjord, focusing on common outdoor areas and attractive housing.
”City and water – hand in hand” was the motto of our winning proposal for a residential development at the outskirts of Trondheim, consisting of 300 apartments built in 7 stages. The units range in size from 42 to 130 square meters.
An overall structure running north to south ensures fjord vistas from most of the apartments, as well as from the outdoor areas. Creating pleasant meeting spots was an important part of the project, because of the social benefits they provide.
The buildings are stepped, ranging from two stories against the waterfront up to four stories against the road. The small directional changes of the structure allows for better views and more varied spaces between the buildings, leading to a richer experience of space. A path runs east-west through the site, partially following an old industrial road, in addition to an esplanade along the waterfront.
The facades are arranged in two layers – an interplay between lighter and darker vertical cladding. The darker hue is used on the balconies and the recessed parts. In the access balconies, fireproof panels with different colours for each floor adds some variation, along with four different colour schemes for the entrance doors.
Concrete decks and load-bearing partitions cast in-situ joined by steel columns form the main construction. The exterior walls are pre-constructed elements, with pre-treated, wooden cladding mounted on-site.
