HVWestland, the Westland hockey association, was ready for something new. Its membership was growing and its results were improving too. The organisation needed new premises to satisfy its requirements. Thanks to the efforts of all the members and volunteers, the finances and other resources were raised for an entirely new club house, including spacious changing facilities, storage for all the necessary sports gear and kit, and an appealing meeting space with a direct view of the main pitch. The new club house is a clear, voluminous space that narrows at the key points: the entrance to and exit from the reception area, the cafeteria, terrace and changing rooms. The entrance is clear and distinguished, and the space has been elevated at this point, with access via a staircase and access ramp. The route to the committee room, changing rooms and meeting space is easy to find and there is a direct view of the hockey pitches. No elevation has been applied in relation to the changing rooms, in order to avoid any obstacles to entering them. The structure of the building consists of a regular pattern that is repeated in a smaller scale in the pattern on the outside walls, broken by the large glass facades. This maximises the openings to optimise contact with the hockey pitches. The structure and use of materials combined with the overall image all perfectly match the new course being charted by HVWestland.
