Hoag Hospital is two licensed hospitals in a single facility: Hoag Orthopedic Hospital and Hoag Hospital Irvine. As Hospital administrators, physicians, and designers explored the community’s needs for a facility that is relevant far into the future, the scope grew from a simple renovation into a significant remodel, putting a strain on available resources. The design team used simple materials and detailing, as well as finding creative solutions like a photography competition to stretch funding while giving the community a sense of ownership when they see their photography on the walls. The new spaces are brighter and more modern, with improved flow. In addition, changes to medical processes and technologies provide a greatly improved healing environment. The 14-month renovation project encompassed the entire hospital and was divided into 14 packages to accelerate agency review and stagger construction. This project achieved LEED CI Silver certification
Program: The Hoag Hospital Irvine renovation includes 72 medical-surgical (med-surg) beds, a 12-bed ICU, an 11-bay emergency department, imaging, cardiology services, two operating rooms with a 10-bay pre-op/post-anesthesia care unit, a new sterile process department, and a health resource center. The Hoag Orthopedic Institute features nine operating rooms, an 18-bay pre-op plus 18-bay post-anesthesia care unit, 70 orthopedic med-surg beds, a new physical therapy gym, a new sterile processing department, and a nurse navigator.
