Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach requested strategy and interior design services to convert an existing Inpatient Unit to a Residential Living Facility and convert another space into an Inpatient Chemical Dependency Unit.
The facility was designed with careful attention to initially creating an environment that exceeded project requirements while keeping cost of ownership as a backdrop in the design process, and mitigating ongoing expense whenever possible. The design and operation of the Chemical Dependency Residential Living Program had to reinforce not only the facility ambience directions established by Hoag, but also operational and conceptual aspects that animate the Hoag and program brand promises.
The built space and its furnishings were designed to provide a safe and quiet space to support thought and reflection, elements that sustain emotional and physical transition, flexibility that creates opportunities for interaction and wellness, and areas to create, build, and sustain a supportive sense of community.
Program: Public areas consisting of a welcome/reception area, phone room, public toilet and two consultation spaces. Patient care area consists of 21 patient rooms, 8 patient toilet/shower rooms, laundry room, two group spaces, two resource/education spaces, and a 25-seat dining room. Staff areas include 5 counselor desks, 4 intake workrooms, and three management offices. Outdoor space includes a garden, game area, meeting spaces, reflection spaces, group spaces, and a smoking area.
