HN04 House is a renovation project of a semi-detached villa located in Vinhomes Riverside, Long Biên District, Hanoi. The project seeks to redefine the living experience within the context of contemporary urban developments, where residential neighborhoods are often shaped by repetitive and standardized design patterns.
The spatial organization of the house is conceived as a sequence of layered, open spaces, continuously transitioning from the urban traffic axis through the front garden and into the main functional zones. These spaces gradually unfold toward the rear, culminating in a courtyard that directly interfaces with the public waterfront landscape, together forming a coherent and unified spatial structure.
Through this design approach, the boundary between interior and exterior is deliberately blurred. The perceived depth of the space is extended by means of spatial elongation, allowing nature to become an integral part of everyday life rather than a distant backdrop.
The front garden functions as a transitional buffer, guiding entry into the house via a narrow pathway across a wooden bridge that spans a koi pond. Moving gently beneath the tree canopy, this approach leads toward the main foyer. Here, the presence of water offers a moment of pause, allowing residents to momentarily set aside the hurried rhythm of urban life before returning to the calm and intimacy of the home.
The ground floor accommodates the primary living functions, including the living room, kitchen, and dining area. These spaces are separated from the surrounding landscape by large glass partitions, enabling the interior to seamlessly merge with the garden as a natural extension of the living environment.
Adjacent to the stair core, a shared family living area combined with a vertical void is introduced as the spatial intersection of the entire house—connecting inside and outside, above and below, and maintaining continuity both horizontally and vertically.
From this point, the space opens further toward the rear courtyard, where outdoor activities and family gatherings take place, before reaching the tranquil riverfront. The presence of water and open air contributes to a sense of relaxation and serenity for all members of the household.
By restructuring the spatial framework and exploring the relationship between architecture, human experience, and nature, HN04 House proposes an alternative approach to villa design within urban residential developments.
Rather than pursuing expressive or iconic gestures, the project quietly focuses on enhancing the quality of daily life. Here, architecture becomes a tool for organizing living patterns and a mediating element that reconnects people with nature—adapting to its social context while responding to the practical needs of a contemporary family.
