The
„HKW“ is located in the geographic centre
of RWTH Aachen University, right in the middle of Europe close to the
border of Belgium and the Netherlands.
HKW’s
historic use, dating from its construction in the 50s, was to deliver
heat to RWTH’s buildings in the centre of Aachen. Several sections
were added to the building during the course of the 1950s, before it
was shut down in the 1990s awaiting a new use. After several studies
of the feasibility of converting the building for another purpose, in
2008 IParch began to redesign one part of the structure to meet RWTH
Aachen University’s new demand for small lecture halls and lecture
rooms after the switch to the final Bachelor and Master degree
system.
In
2008, the Bau- und Liegenschaftsbetrieb, the owner of all German
state buildings, authorized IParch to redesign RWTH Aachen
University’s old heating plant as a new lecture auditorium with 2
lecture halls and several lecture rooms. The reconstruction started
in 2009 and was finished in October 2010 to be used by all students
of RWTH Aachen University.
