Contemporary design for a contemporary art lover in a 1900 house built by Italian architects and builders, consolidated and restored in Craiova by BAM architecture studio.
Located in the city center on a street in the old neighborhood of Saint New George, near a historic monument church, on a steeply sloped terrain, the residence was saved from disappearance and reorganized.
In the consolidation project, the solutions protected the original architecture of the house, the interior staircase was repositioned and by replacing severely damaged wooden beams with concrete slabs, more generous spaces were obtained. The property, originally intended for residential use, became the headquarters of a company after the 1990s and underwent some transformations that made it impossible to save the original carpentry, except for the carved solid wood door, which was refurbished.
In the renovation project, the architects distributed the kitchen and dining area in the basement, illuminated by an English lightwell, while the living room and three bedrooms remained on the elevated ground floor to meet the needs of the residing family.
The walls were kept white to showcase the art collection. Ceilings became a new elevation as spaces have small surfaces and high ceilings. In the basement, the new exposed concrete floor was partially retained to remind of recent interventions on the house.
The interior spaces seamlessly integrate living and art collection in a natural and inseparable way. The original narrow and tall openings flood the ground floor with natural light throughout the year.
Furniture was chosen to create a comfortable, timeless space with an open plan where art dominates, in contrast to the historical architecture. By juxtaposing historical layers with ultra-contemporary ones, the historical heritage is adapted to contemporary lifestyle.
The choice of furniture pieces and lighting fixtures exclusively considered the owners' style, blending iconic design pieces with commercial ones in a restrained eclectic style.
The house is set back from the street, featuring a U-shaped garden that provides privacy to the residence and is organized to offer multiple points of interest and activity centers outdoors. The garden was designed in the spirit of the new perennial movement.
The front street fence was reconstructed, as the original one had been replaced. It reuses forged iron elements from 1900's that were recovered and refurbished, around which a fence of exposed solid burned brick was designed.
