Hillside House — A Rustic Modern Revival by 2FORM Architecture
Originally designed in 1961 by Dick Chambers, Hillside House is a midcentury modern gem brought back to life through a thoughtful and bold remodel by 2FORM Architecture. The 2,671-square-foot home was full of potential when Myron and Gabi Chadowitz purchased it in 2008. They knew immediately that with care and creativity, the house could reclaim its former architectural charm.
What began as a vision to relocate the kitchen quickly expanded into a full reimagining of the home’s layout. The house’s original design had been altered over the years, most notably a complete remodel of the home's carport. It had been segmented to house the primary kitchen, dining, living and sleeping spaces. Consequently, the compartmentalization of this ground floor made the space feel dark and disconnected.
Architect Richard Shugar of 2FORM proposed a radical idea: flip the house. By moving the primary living areas upstairs and relocating the bedrooms below, the home could fully embrace its hillside views and bring natural light into the heart of everyday life. Builder Mica McOmber joined the team to help realize this transformation.
Working closely together, the owners, architect, and builder leaned into a creative and collaborative process. The home’s solid bones allowed for a fluid reorganization of space, while honoring the original midcentury aesthetic. The Chadowitzs brought their own twist to the design, embracing a warm, rustic palette to contrast the clean lines of midcentury style.
In the kitchen, Gabi selected salvaged elm with natural knots and streaks, adding texture and personality to the heart of the home. She dubbed this style “rustic modern.” New mechanical and electrical systems were installed throughout, along with maple flooring upstairs and cork flooring below. Bathrooms were fully renovated, including a spa-like master bath featuring an oversized, egg-shaped soaking tub.
Outside, the home’s façade was transformed with a striking dark stain that contrasts beautifully with accents of honey-toned cedar siding, a process that took two and a half months of precision craftsmanship.
