HILLS
Between the city and the mountains, the "living art gallery" is a dialogue between humanities and nature, and a balance between art and life.
HILLS is a modern homestay renovated from a village building surrounded by tea hills in the World Cultural Heritage West Lake Scenic Area. Inspired by the way of ancient Chinese gatherings and banquets, JK DESIGN conceived this homestay is composed of "Bar, Café, Exhibition and Stay" as a place for gathering, leisure, and enjoying nature. The design strategy was to create a space that can bring the feeling of an art museum in order to help people get away from urban life and find a way of ideal living style.
The project includes the main building and a small building on the side and tied together by courtyards and pools. The concept of " living in an art museum" is focused on creating a dialogue between inside activity and outside scenery, between art and life, and between humanities and nature.
The main building entries from a double-height vestibule in the semi-basement space. The natural light comes through the glass bricks on the upper level and the shadows of outdoor green plants dispel the feeling of the basement. With curved vaults, floating spiral staircases, and cantilevered platforms, the spirituality of the art space pulls the perception from the mountains into a modern art museum.
The bar is located on the lower level with a floating counter and light box behind it. With the use of metal finishes and lights, the space adds illusions to people.
The cafe on the second floor is a bright space, open to the outdoor courtyard. Transparent folding doors, flowing white veil curtains, and irregular arc-shaped arches compose the three-layer interface between inside and outside. Staticity and mobility of air, sounds, and activities are controlled by three layers. When it is fully opened, it is a space toward the mountains, birds, and pools. When it is closed, it is a quiet interior.
The exhibition is spreading all over the space. The pure and simple interior is a backdrop, and it amplifies the perception of the experience, making artworks, furniture, or elements become the main body of the space and the art pieces. The lower level bar includes exhibition spaces as well. Various art exhibitions have been held here as a way to bring people to come to HILLS.
Stay is the life ritual completed in the end at HILLS. A poetic dwelling is an ideal life that the guests are seeking in HILLS. There are 12 guest rooms total on the third and fourth levels in the main building and two floors in the small building. Each room has different designs and views, providing a perfect place for travelers to take a break from the busy world. The room is designed to simplify other functions as much as possible to focus on the real interaction between friends, family, nature, and art. The bathroom and dressing space are highlighted in the room for people to emphasize the ritual in their lifestyle.
Different shapes of 3D aluminum signs on the doors are taken from the geometry of the interior space of each room, creating a unique room signage system.
Pools and courtyards also create the interface between the building and hills. Staying here with the breeze, bird sounds, tea smells, and even starry night.
HILLS is an innovative homestay using design to inspire people living in the present, and looking forward to the future.
