Nestled within a verdant neighborhood perched on a bluff overlooking downtown Austin, this tightly
composed residence elegantly expresses the delights of living small.
The site, constrained by strict municipal guidelines and an existing structure, presented a multitude of
challenges. The response is a spirited design that creatively combines efficiency and sophistication.
Conceived as a live/work arrangement for one or two occupants, Hillmont Studio compactly encapsulates
850 square feet and features a refined yet simple material palette of walnut millwork, black granite
countertops, pine flooring upstairs and a concrete floor on the ground level. Two full-height glazed walls
imbue the downstairs interior with profuse natural light to showcase an exquisitely crafted poured-in-place
concrete wall running the length of the house, extending beyond the enclosure to screen a spacious patio.
Full site development, from curb to back fence, complements the ideal of a relaxed indoor/outdoor lifestyle
amidst the emergent density of central Austin.
