The challenge of this new home was to maximize the floor area for a growing family of 5 on a very steep site while still taking advantage of the sweeping views of Mt. Tamalpais and San Francisco. The original home on the site was a small but nice example of 50’s architecture and many of the existing features were highlighted including the floor to ceiling glass in the dining room.
Organized around the 2 story zinc and glass box, which houses the entry and grand stairs, the remaining forms cascade with the topography to meld into the landscape. The hyper modernity of the metal and glass aesthetic is off-set with the subtlety of white siding and wood windows and doors. The resulting architecture is one of subtle contradiction and elegant resolution.
