The 15,000 SF pre-engineered metal building is intended to serve as the new church building and community center for High Point Community Church in rural North Birmingham, Alabama. The project takes inspiration of form and material to echo the surrounding agricultural context. Key programmatic features include space for daycare, children Sunday school classrooms, a 4,800 SF community and worship space, a 1,500 SF outdoor covered porch, 1,500 sf interior dog-trot (lobby, pre-function, and reception) space with cafe, and youth hang out spaces that can also be used as community storm shelter spaces. The architectural solution that is implied is one that creates connectivity by “physically opening and selectively revealing” the place. The result is a place of intensity where activities converge and people celebrate building community. When objects are transparent or translucent, they are luminous when light is introduced. Light Draws Light...The project won a 2010 AIASC Unbuilt Citation Award
