The San Mateo-Foster City School District is introducing new multi-purpose buildings across its Elementary Schools. Highlands Elementary, originally built in the 1970s, urgently needs a larger, modernized facility to enhance spaces where students learn, eat, celebrate, perform, and play.
The new 8,000-square-foot multi-purpose building will include a state-of-the-art kitchen and servery for preparing healthy meals, a 3-foot-high stage equipped with lighting and curtains for performances, and dedicated support areas for physical education and PTA activities. Situated next to a playfield and hard courts, the versatile facility ensures convenient access for students throughout the day.
Inspired by the Eichler homes in the surrounding neighborhood, the design incorporates a low-profile roofline, expansive glazing, exposed structural elements, and seamless indoor-outdoor connections. Oversized operable doors enable the space to extend outdoors for larger events, while additional openings allow students to transition easily to adjacent play areas.
Sustainability is central to the design. Rooftop photovoltaic solar panels will enable net-zero energy use. Extensive glazing maximizes daylight, encourages natural ventilation, and provides visual connections to the campus, community, and natural surroundings. Warm wood ceilings create a welcoming atmosphere and enhance acoustic performance. Outdoor features include a shaded plaza, native landscaping, a new turf playfield, and infrastructure to manage 100% of site stormwater effectively.
