The most commun project brief we are given is “make it bigger”, “we want MORE space”
Rara is interested in exploring how we can create fantastic spaces within the existing built
environment. This already fabulous Docklands apartment couldn’t be made bigger. In this rare occasion, we were simply asked to make it better.
The sensational view is nothing to scoff at. The challenge was designing something that allowed you to appreciate the home for more than that. We built a new shower in the window so the owners could enjoy the view every morning, as well as the breakfast bar, looking directly at the view; an unconventional solution since apartments rarely have their kitchens situated to take advantage of the view.
Transforming the entrance into a proper entrance hall took some substantial re-arranging. The kitchen needed to be relocated away from the entry, making way for a library and a feature 2 way fireplace, adding a new aspect for visitors upon entry. The wall panelling up the stairs and of course the oval shaped mirrored dining room designed to allow for more intimate spaces within a very large overall space. The main advantage of the wall panelling in the dining room is that guests would still be able to appreciate the view even with their backs facing the window. The angles have also been cleverly situated such that each guest can see the face of the peers in the mirrors as well as catch glimpses of the view behind them.
