This high-performance sports center we designed is located on a prominent site in Pretoria. It consists of a courtyard typology, where public programs such as the coffee shop, restaurant, retail space, and sports center spill into the central, planted courtyard. The restaurant and sports center open up completely, providing a clear view of the adjacent rugby fields and creating an inviting and inclusive atmosphere. The sculptural glass and steel lift within the courtyard offers easy access to the upper levels, which house the more private functions such as the medical suites, biokeneticists, physios, and offices.
The rooftop bar and swimming pool offer breathtaking city views and are a perfect place to relax after a workout. The louvered screen and diagonal vertical fins on the west façade provide solar control and privacy and create a sculptural presence, embodying speed, energy, and movement, reflecting the building’s purpose as a high-performance center.
A central axis runs through the building and is informed by the site’s history as a historic trading post, tying into the heritage significance it embodies.
This contemporary facility caters to the needs of sports enthusiasts, health-conscious individuals, and the surrounding local community.
