Occupying a sloping site in the high desert geography of central Oregon, this residence utilizes gently terracing floor plates to contour the interior spaces to the natural landscape.
A central transparent entry vestibule distributes circulation to flanking wings that contain both private and public spaces. Horizontal planes dominate the staggering roof line, offering ample ambient daylighting to central interior spaces, while perimeter mass walls optimize temperature regulation in the region’s large diurnal cycles.
The desire for occupiable outdoor spaces has been prioritized through the use of upper level terraces, which offer direct views of the adjacent nature reserve and Mount Bachelor in the eastern Cascade range.
A locally-inspired material palette of timber and stone echoes the vernacular of the region, while particular attention has been shown towards sustainability in the use of desert-appropriate landscaping and preservation of existing landscape.
