As part of the technical project team at the Dirección General de Infraestructura Física of the Sonora State Health Department (DGIF SSS), I had the opportunity to lead the comprehensive design of the inpatient care level (second floor) of the Sonora Children’s Hospital (Hospital Infantil del Estado de Sonora, HIES)—the only pediatric specialty and referral hospital in the state. My role encompassed the entire architectural process, from conceptual development to the full technical design of the project. The interior design was also conceived as a reference model for future interventions on other levels of the hospital, applying consistent floor and ceiling design criteria to establish spatial cohesion and a renewed institutional identity for HIES.
The project involved the complete renovation of approximately 14,600 square feet of the inpatient care level. Prior to the intervention, the area showed significant deterioration due to heavy use and the passage of time. It also failed to meet current healthcare regulations and lacked a sufficient number of appropriate spaces for pediatric hospitalization.
The executed proposal introduced a functional redistribution, resulting in eight hospitalization modules, each with a capacity for four beds/cribs, plus one additional module with three beds/cribs. Each module was equipped with its own bathroom core, allowing patients to remain within their immediate environment to access sanitary services. Shared modules also included a trough sink, medication preparation table, and handwashing station, while the three-bed module incorporated a dedicated hydrotherapy space.
The level was also equipped with two isolation areas, accessed through a filter zone that includes a nursing station. Each isolation room complies with current regulations and features its own dedicated bathroom module.
Additional support spaces included:
A medication distribution area and mixing center, serving both the second and third floors.
A clinical procedure room for interventions and IV placements.
A playroom for pediatric patients.
A teaching classroom.
A resident rest area.
A central nursing station with tributary spaces for efficient operation.
To ensure optimal performance of all systems, the project included the complete renewal of infrastructure networks, including plumbing, fire protection, medical gases, air conditioning, and electrical systems—with differentiated circuits for normal operation, emergency, and life safety.
Finally, the interior design was tailored specifically for preschool and school-age patients, creating colorful, vibrant, and welcoming environments that positively influence the emotional well-being of young patients. The design approach was grounded in color psychology and therapeutic spatial strategies, and complies with NOM-016-SSA3, the current regulatory standard for healthcare facilities of this type.
