This project was a design for a small bed and breakfast hotel in Key West. In keeping with the Key West vernacular style, I used wood construction with wood siding and standing seam metal roofs. Considering Key West’s climate, keeping the building cool was a major concern. Therefore, I raised the building up off of the ground and also provided adequate cross ventilation in all of the rooms. The building surrounds a courtyard with a shaded wraparound porch, and there is another shaded front porch.
The most unique part of the design is the octagonally shaped central circulation tower. It is completely open-air, and its bare, skeletal structure is in stark contrast to the rest of the building. However, it does have shutters which can be closed at night to secure the building or to protect from severe weather.
