As an architect practicing in a tropical climate, I am acutely aware of the impact my designs have on the environment and the need to harmonize with nature.
This renovation project, in particular, presents unique challenges due to the existing structure's limitations. However, I view this as an exciting opportunity to address inherent issues and create a truly remarkable living space.
My design priorities are consistently guided by the following principles:
Incorporating greenery: Utilizing low-growing plants along the expansive windows to establish verdant spaces without obstructing the views of the nearby canals. This serves the primary purpose of mitigating the harsh sunlight, regulating indoor temperatures, and creating a "green curtain" effect when viewed from below. The natural material of the plants effectively reduces heat and provides a sense of separation.
Optimizing natural light: Designing a system that allows for a moderate amount of natural light to penetrate the interior spaces, ensuring sufficient illumination for daytime activities while maximizing energy efficiency through the use of LED lighting during the day. The two facades of the house provide an advantage in capturing natural light. Additionally, daylight accentuates the steel beams, which are being added to the structure to create green corridors and enhance the existing architecture. When viewed from the street, the contrast between the lush greenery and the stark black steel creates a visually striking iron trellis with verdant walkways.
Ensuring ventilation: Strategically placing windows on all levels and in every space to facilitate proper airflow and maximize the utilization of the building's openings. Concealing the windows behind steel frames on the facade enhances the aesthetics and preserves the unobstructed views for the occupants.
Creating striking forms: Enveloping the entire house in a steel frame, arranged in a Rubik's Cube-like pattern. Employing vibrantly colored yellow-orange steel bars to accentuate the entrance area. The steel enclosure serves as a backdrop for the impressive green corridors that seamlessly integrate throughout the house.
Additional considerations:
Due to the rather outdated and ornate condition of the existing structure, the steel frame encasement will conceal these imperfections and present a fresh, captivating facade.
Meticulous attention to detail in the design is crucial to ensure overall harmony and suitability for the tropical climate.
With these innovative design concepts and a deep respect for nature, I am confident that this renovation project will transform into a remarkable landmark, offering an ideal living space for its inhabitants.
Throughout the entire design process, our primary focus has been on fostering a closer connection between humanity and nature. This aspiration is also reflected in our decision to incorporate a prominent natural green element into the building's facade. We hope that this feature will serve as a gentle reminder of the importance of environmental stewardship and inspire passersby to appreciate the beauty and value of nature.
