Brand Architects enjoyed co-creating this striking sports pavilion alongside the City of Greater Geelong, and in collaboration with St Joseph’s Football and Netball Clubs and St Peter’s Cricket Club.
The building is both beautiful and functional, with as much attention paid to the materiality of the building as to the fit-for-purpose design.
The strong design aims to give the building an interesting, arresting edge treatment, as if it is lifting itself up towards the two ovals that it serves.
The plywood soffit lining is both a natural product, and somehow otherworldly with it’s lifted, zig-zag pattern. Natural clear-finished plywood triangles are contrasted with dark-stained panels and even some highlight panels painted gold.
The language of the building continues in the Social Space, in particular around the bar where the zig-zag pattern resumes.
At night, the building becomes even more conspicuous, as LED light strips create a welcoming glow in the soffit lining.
Internally, the change rooms have a lighter palette, with windows on both sides so that during the day artificial light is not required. The walls are lined with Cemintel Barestone, a pre-finished cement sheet that is textural, durable and easily replaceable.
