Spacesmith provided architectural services for the design of three joined buildings on Madison Avenue and 63rd Street to create one of the largest Hermès stores in the world. Working closely with design architect RDAI, the concept is a nod to the Manhattan skyline and New York’s Art Deco past with materials that focus on Hermes’ legacy of craft. In addition to the traditional details clients have come to expect from Hermès, our team worked to incorporate new concepts and standards to attract a younger clientele.
The flagship’s central structure is a 1921 Federalist building on the southwest corner of Madison Avenue and 63rd Street. Formerly a bank, the three-story structure (with newly added roof terrace) is connected to two, five-story structures on either side to form an L shape. Our challenge was to translate RDAI’s sophisticated and highly detailed design into a physical reality. The layout is a series of intimate salons linked to flow seamlessly into one another through portals. The character of every department is in response to the goods offered within.
As patrons enter, they are greeted by Hermès’ iconic floor pattern with terrazzo inlay arranged around a central, dramatic feature stair. To one side lies the area dedicated to fashion jewelry, perfume, silk scarves, and beauty with curved walls and a delicate, light color palette of pinks and beiges. To the other side, the men’s leather-goods, silk accessories, and equestrian accoutrements are showcased on marble bases with oak finishes.
The second floor holds home furnishings and the men’s universe, as well as a private lounge for commissioning made-to-measure suits and shirts. The furnishings zone utilizes soft tones of beige and brown to provide a subtle backdrop to the merchandise. The men’s area utilizes dark wood finishes, recycled bamboo, and a green color palette. The floor above is dedicated to the women’s department – purposefully feminine with curved walls and private alcoves carved in neutral, earthy tones.
The fourth floor holds the brand’s popular women’s handbags. A dramatic oval-shaped, double-height skylight allows natural light to spill into the space. A feature unique to this store, the beveled opening is surrounded by a custom-made, 3D wall feature mimicking a tree line. This light filled space overlooks an accessible rooftop terrace, allowing a touch of nature in. The fifth-floor space is reserved for alterations and repair.
Connecting the buildings is a majestic, Portuguese limestone staircase that stretches from the ground floor to the fourth along a 49-foot-high wall that acts like a vertical gallery with paintings and equine themed photographs.
