Her Works is a project located in Luang Prabang, a UNESCO World Heritage town, positioned along the city’s main road. The initiative involves renovating a historic building nearly 100 years old into a shop that sells Lao products. The shop’s mission is to empower Lao women by supporting their crafts and utilizing locally sourced materials.
The design concept starts with the intention of making the shop a place where visitors not only purchase products but also gain knowledge and enjoy a unique experience. At the same time, the building’s heritage character is preserved. The design incorporates elements of a museum-like atmosphere blended with an engaging and playful environment.
The store layout is arranged in a circular pattern, allowing visitors to walk through without creating traffic congestion. An educational zone near the entrance provides information about the origins of the products, making it easy for customers to understand the stories behind the items as they browse through the store. Furniture is thoughtfully placed between the building’s columns and beams, enabling customers to appreciate the preserved architecture while exploring the products.
The furniture is designed to be flexible, allowing it to be opened, closed, repositioned, or rotated, creating a lively and enjoyable shopping experience. Efforts to restore the historic building also focus on preserving its original structure as much as possible. Bamboo frameworks coated with lime plaster are used to replace deteriorated walls, while local materials such as clay tiles for flooring, woven rattan, and handmade mulberry paper are utilized for interior decorations, maintaining the authenticity of Luang Prabang’s traditional craftsmanship.
This project not only brings an old building back to life but also promotes sustainability and environmental conservation. Additionally, it offers visitors a new experience through learning about Lao culture and the exceptional craftsmanship of Lao women artisans.
