Henrico County Center for Environmental Studies and Sustainability (CESS)
Henrico County, VA | Education, Regenerative Design
McLennan Design was selected to design, in collaboration with Perkins&Will’s North Carolina studio, America’s first Living Building Challenge–certified public K–12 school, transforming Henrico County’s historic Wilton Farm into a regenerative educational campus. The 11,500 sf facility integrates solar power, on-site rainwater capture, and salvaged materials, while classrooms, commons, and prep spaces are oriented for daylight, biophilic connection, and flexible learning. Elevated and carefully sited within forests, wetlands, and a floodplain, the building itself serves as a living classroom, teaching students sustainability, ecological stewardship, and resilience through its systems, materials, and form.
Key Features:
Living Building Challenge–pursuing, regenerative public school
On-site energy generation and water capture with 105% net-positive energy
Flexible classrooms, commons, and administrative spaces for interdisciplinary learning
Materials transparency, salvaged wood finishes, and visible building systems
Biophilic design connecting students to forests, wetlands, and the James River
