Situation:
The site offers an incredible panorama of Los Angeles, from the new high-rises downtown to the infinite expanse of the Pacific Ocean.
If some design projects need to be sheltered from the sites they inhabit, this one basks in its idyllic location, even more so because it is also optimally oriented in relation to the trajectory of the sun, which rises over downtown and sets over the pacific.
The different orientations of the residence allow for a better reading of the various functions of the interior spaces. For example, all the common spaces are oriented along the median of the two principal axes.
Architectural Solutions:
All these references have in common one main idea-- to plunge the inhabitants into the sublime beauty of the surrounding landscape.
Selecting certain points of view does not mean abandoning others. The urbanization of downtown, the tumult of the Pacific, the still savage land on this ridge all offer different, varied appreciations of this unique place. The functions and proportions of the house and the grounds participate in this visual stroll. We based our design on the relationship between landscape and built environment, and we took as our organizing concept the framed views of the landscape that we could offer throughout the house and grounds, emphasizing a smooth programmatic flow of spaces.”
Landscape Frame:
There are many illustrious examples of how architecture can frame a certain view.
The challenge in our case was to find a common language for framing the two principal views while allowing the secondary volumes to communicate with the nearby terrain.
Here architecture gives way to the contemplation of Nature with the building nestling itself into the uniquely spectacular ridges, which dominate the city.
Interventions:
The facades participate in siting the building, with the north elevation being more massif and anchored in the hillside and the south facade more fluid, light and open to the landscape.
The entry is like an invitation in the predominantly closed façade to the north. It acts as a circulation hub containing the main staircase, with its spectacular views within an interior atrium.
The design results from the assembly of 3 volumes. The ground floor is wide open to the views and contains what are largely the common spaces.
In the east wing, separated by simple scrims, are the main living area, the kitchen and dining room and a covered outdoor dining area extending underneath the epic cantilevered master bedroom. All those spaces are open and fluid, with the exception of the kitchen, and all feature large window bays offering magnificent and omnipresent views of Los Angeles.
The space narrows once you enter the study and the west wing. From there one connects visually to the driveway, to the common areas of the east wing and to the panorama in the south. A glass enclosed corridor links the common areas to the basement and the pool house below, effectively dissolving any distinction between the house’s interior and exterior. Largely sheltered by the 2nd floor, one is protected and semi-enclosed while basking in the landscape.
