The House of 1000 Windows – aka Hedge House. A House, Gallery and Artist Residences – Tauranga, New Zealand
An interest in the arts reveals a multi-faceted character, who takes great joy in captured space within a canvas, solidified sculptural formations and insertions and soundscapes that linger to transport ones imagination to another place. So it is the façade of the House of 1000 Windows that is the collection; of objects (windows) representing the humble house, human scale and humanist material softening. It is this house that contains the philanthropist. It is the interface of the façade of windows that faces Tauranga City, forming many windows to one soul.
The house is formatted by the lineal strength of the shelter belts, hedges which in themselves create giant sized rooms. Here the house aligns, penetrates and exists with 3 spatially repetitive formations pass though the hedge, marking a threshold to the private areas of the residence, of the Kitchen and Bedrooms. The lineal portion of the house is of two galleried levels, connected by the central stair and Library. The outlook from these spaces is across the orchards and beyond the Mount and the Port of Tauranga. Connection to planted geometries, rooted fast to the ground. Of horizon of ground, gridded with hedges and the sky.
