A pioneering development in city centre check-in, the project combines three themes: an aerodynamic seamless public face, a highly complex integration of services and systems supporting it, and Brunel’s heritage listed structure housing it. Our involvement spanned from strategic assessment to operational brief to design team leader. A comprehensive architectural design service encompassed systems co-ordination down to design of desks, suspended logos and mobile sign boards.
The design makes extensive use of cool hard materials but softened by curving geometries and a play of separated planes and coloured light. Branding and services, which usually compete in airport environments to dominate the visual field, are here carefully incorporated into the architecture. Behind the scenes, dual baggage handling conveyors drop into a 300 metre tunnel transferring bags in airport security conditions to purpose built trains - without compromising passenger flows at concourse level.
