This ground-breaking
hospital brings together physicians, acute hospital care and related services
within the framework of a six-level acute care hospital. Integrated hospital
support, physicians’ office space, health services and related retail shops
create a “one-stop shop” allowing physicians to monitor their patients while
performing office consultations in their offices.
A new horizontal expansion builds on its pioneering legacy and
increases the hospital's capacity to treat patients and provide surgery and
outpatient functions. The project consists of 9,500m2 of new building and
4,000m2 of refurbishment. The challenges faced here included keeping all
services in the facility operational whilst construction was underway, and
tight budget constraints. These were overcome by designing solutions that
encouraged reducing circulation and presented new operating concepts. In
addition, the design of the patient unit reduced the patient rooms without
reducing the private/semi private ratio. The solution was curving the
triangular patient unit inward, reducing circulation and providing nine-foot
ceilings and large picture windows so each room was perceived larger and thus
more comfortable.
The expansion has been designed to accommodate changes in
healthcare delivery and features a number of flexible spaces that can be adapted
dependent upon acuity and technological advances.
