The health
care facility for the elderly was built in 2009. It comprises self-contained
apartments for more independent residents as well as facilities for
residential therapy for elder people – mostly with dementia.
The landscape
design creates a quiet, flourishing and fresh oasis that can either be interactive
or just admired. The result is a place
with a special positive identity, a warm and welcoming place.
The site is
surrounded by a belt of Snowy Mespilus (Amelanchier). This makes the site inviting
to those passing on the street and unique for residents during all seasons. In
addition, the light floral veil of Snowy Mespilus provides privacy to residents
on the first floor and gives less mobile residents positive contact to the
outside. Lawn pavers used in the front parking
lots create an impression of garden.
The
courtyard is dominated by a loop walk. This loop walk supports people with
dementia in their motor activity by helping them maintain oriententation. The walk is therefore flat and coloured in a
contrasting yellow colour. A bus-stop, a remembrance to the former life, is a
place to meet. The central terrace is a focal point where people can meet to
talk and – on an elevated, wheel-chair accessible planting bed – to plant herbs
and flowers.
Within the
loop walk a sensuous garden (Parterre florale) has a variety of plants and
flowers such as Lavender (Lavandula), Sage (Salvia), Tulips and Roses. It is a place to
actively feel and touch the environment as well as to watch and smell the
colourful beauty of Nature; when looking out a window of the facility,,during a
walk on the loop, or from a terrace chair.
