The project is the revival one of the most superior forums and landmarks of Benghazi. Benghazi is a coastal city in the east Libya, North Africa with many historical periods passed through centuries. Sadly, huge parts of the historical downtown are destroyed due to the running war. This project's main idea is to lighten pictures in the middle of the historical Sliphium Square in the heart of Benghazi downtown. These pictures embody and reflect the historical importance of this forum. In addition, the light will bring back to life eras that have passed by through this place and will revive the damaged icon buildings that form the forum surround. The light will be in shape of pipes that absorb the morning daylight and return it back in form of luminous buildings at night.
Brief about Silphium Square" El-Kalssa":
The forum is built by Italian military architects during the Italian colony period. It was built as a historical anniversary. This is reflected in the landscape which is designed as an (O) shape, with six entrance, and is faced the presidency building of the Italian government; later used as a palace named Al- Manar. On the top of the middle feature, there are graphics and decorations with square shapes on the elevation of the palace numberd eleven (11). This is to indicate the date it was built in which is the 6th of October 1911.
The (O) shape is for October with (6) entrances, and (11) squares. It is also the anniversary of the day the Italian navel landed on Benghazi shores for the first time.
Moreover, the forum is located at the center of Benghazi city, with a fountain inside the landscape and a historical monument. At the topof which there is a sculpture of the Silphium plant. This plant used to exist just in Cyrenaica state (east of Libya) and was featured as Benghazi main symbol during the Italian colony. Facing the forum is the famous Al-Manar palace which started as the Italian government palace then the king palace and the Libyan University last. This building has a historical point in the Libyan culture as king Idris El-Sanoussi declared Libya independence from the balcony facing the forum in 1951. The forum itself was named several names Silphium Square, 28th of October forum, and presently, El-Kalssa. The forum connects different famous streets; one to mention is St. Barbara with the well-known Italy Hotel located at the Napoli flats.
Reasons for the chosen names of the Forum:
28th of October was called as in 1937 at this date, first postage stamp was issued on the opening ceremony of the square. Silphium Square was named by the locals. 9th of August was called according to two occasions: firstly, El-Sanoussi Army establishment, secondly, the Libyan Army Establishment. In the seventies it was called El-Kalssa according to El-Kalssa's martyrdom incident in Palestine 1974.
Silphium is a wild plant that has extinct. It used to vegetate only in the eastern region of the Libya. It was known as a cure to any intractable disease in the Greek era. Italians used it as symbol in Libya. Yet, Greeks import Silphium from the Green Mountain region (eastern side of Libya). Greeks considered this flower from the God.
