Head Space proposes a sculptural library space that inspires children, and promotes the love of reading.
Installed at the top (or head) of the existing building at Thornhill Primary School, it gives space to the head and mind - an inspirational space for quietly exploring the world of knowledge. Lined with books, its shelves are sculpted to provide seats and surfaces to nestle and study and get lost amongst them. In an increasingly digital age, it aims to epitomize the very idea of a school: more than an idea, or community, it offers a physical space of learning.
The proposal revolutionizes the existing library space, lining its expansive walls and generous ceiling height with full-height wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling shelves that symbolize the world of knowledge - an elegant wooden structure lined with its tree-derived complement, paper. Books become like the fruit of the shelving trees , which branch to support the balconies - a ‘natural’ part of everyday life.
