In this project, space is not defined by function, but by the dissolution of boundaries, creating a canvas for life, personal spirit, and identity to freely unfold. Through the deconstruction of balance and a poetic narrative of materials, Hongbo Chen, Creative Director of LubanEra·Design, translates multi-dimensional feminine identities into a perceptible spatial experience. Every turn within the space is not merely a transition in circulation, but a hint to the spatial journey ahead. Space, light, and materiality converge to unfold a “multi-faceted feminine universe,” articulating a profound humanistic sensibility.
The spatial aesthetic is defined by the purity of exposed concrete and the organic ease of liquid stone (petrified wood). As the space extends inward, an elliptical central island serves as both a welcoming gesture and the beginning of the retail journey. Entry walls gently peel from the original structure, converging toward the island to form an enclosure that is visually striking yet quietly restrained.
Breaking Boundaries, Embracing Humanity
Rather than pursuing specific design styles, Hongbo Chen seeks to unlock the commercial value of aesthetics in space. Delving into the identity of female fashion brand hé, the design articulates its brand ethos of unbounded style and effortless fashion. Rooted in the design concept of “contradictory symbiosis,” the brand’s free-spirited character is translated into an artistic spatial language. Reimagined volumes compose the spatial skeleton, crafting an environment that balances tension with warmth, while conveying a spirit of ease.
Through a Narrow Entry, an Open Realm Unfolds
Following the narrative sequence of “breaking boundaries – prelude – revelation,” the entrance facade curves inward, softening the boundary and creating a buffer that naturally mediates between the outdoor landscape and the store interior. A deliberately narrow entryway tightens the view, revealing only glimpses of the interior. Once inside, the space unfolds in a sudden, expansive openness, where lighting creates an immersive ambiance.
Subtle, restrained visual cues gently engage the senses, evoking anticipation and inviting moments of discovery.
Boundaries Dissolve, Realms Take Form
Inside, two large circles demarcate the primary retail zones. Continuous volumes take shape along arcs, standing like quiet islands amid the flow of movement. Their curved forms resonate with the ceiling above, yet subtle shifts and openings break the sense of completeness, echoing the fluid, ever-changing character of the space. With quiet presence, these forms become visual focal points, generating a tension of “separated yet connected” in the space. Within this circular realm, spontaneity and purity unfold, shaping a distinctive environment of openness and balance.
Suspended Geometry, Rhythms of Space and Time
The building’s original exposed exhaust duct system—intricate and immovable—became a catalyst for design imagination. Embracing its inherent constraints, the design transforms rigidity into a medium of natural resonance. Inspired by the cascading rhythm of classical Chinese water features, modern geometric forms—rectangles interwoven with arcs—extend from the duct, generating a sense of spatial and temporal suspension. Interlocking geometric volumes hover mid-air, descending in rhythm toward a central “pool.” Circular light membranes, floating geometric installations, and the irregular limestone flooring together articulate the space’s spontaneous character. They also evoke the poetic imagery of “the Yellow River cascading from the heavens,” creating an impressive focal point.
Circular Light Canopies, Realms of Heaven and Earth
Two large circular light membranes, adjustable in color temperature and brightness, form the spiritual core of the space. Their geometry embodies both physical presence and sacred aura, imbuing the interior with vitality and transcendence. Light diffuses softly across the interior, immersing visitors in a luminous environment of natural comfort.
Where Material Weaves the Scene and Light Crystallizes Beauty
Liquid stone (petrified wood) reveals its layered grain across ceilings and walls, echoing geological strata and carrying the traces of natural evolution. It becomes a medium for dialogue between space and deep time, creating a refined aesthetic where nature and art quietly converge. Exposed concrete, raw and spontaneous, contrasts with the stone’s warmth. Their interplay creates spatial depth and visual tension, distilling a beauty that captures the fluid passage of time.
Multiple Dimensions, Resonant Harmony
Multiplicity is expressed through shifting perspectives and tactile contrasts. Subtle transitions of texture and tone animate the walls, enriching the space’s emotional resonance. Within the retail zones, aged-effect finishes weave with light to create a layered, multi-dimensional aesthetic. Handmade kiln-glazed bricks, each with its own chromatic and textural variations, offer a unique visual moment. Through these diverse materials and perspectives, the design bridges fashion and lifestyle, inviting visitors to explore art, taste, and individuality—ultimately shaping a space that is distinct and resonant.
