Ubuntu Design Group was commissioned to assess and reimagine an existing crèche site comprising a main house, three rental cottages, and a modest early childhood facility. The brief called for an architectural response that could uplift the local community by delivering dignified, regulation-compliant childcare infrastructure—while unlocking the site’s potential as a catalyst for inclusive development.
Following a thorough evaluation, the design team found the existing buildings insufficient in structural integrity, hygiene standards, spatial layout, and compliance with local authority regulations. The current crèche location was deemed unsuitable due to its poor orientation, inadequate natural lighting, and limited security. Sanitation facilities and the overall site layout failed to support the developmental and safety needs of young children.
The proposed concept calls for a full demolition of the inadequate structures and a reconfiguration of the site to prioritize education, safety, and wellbeing. Over 85% of the new layout is dedicated to learning and developmental spaces, with more than 70% adaptable for integrated indoor-outdoor activity. The design includes open-plan classrooms inspired by Montessori learning environments, a central courtyard for morning gatherings and structured play, and green spaces for interactive, nature-based learning.
This regenerative design approach positions the crèche not just as a childcare facility, but as a community anchor—a place where dignity, safety, and imagination meet.
