How to rebuild a row house in conservative nationalistic architecture from the 1950’s in such a manner that it respects the integrity of the whole and assumes its contemporary condition? This difficult problem was addressed rebuilding the archetypical elements in an honest, abstracted manner, and assuming the extensions from the original volume as new. Situated in a privileged area of Lisbon, and in line with the client’s wishes, the house was extended to its legal limit, building a large basement lighted by a sunken patio, a wood-covered extension to the living room, and a secretly-accessed attic. Inside, the spaces flow openly into each other but retain their own spatial character. The atmosphere is dominated by the use of wood, on the floors, walls and integrated furniture, opposed to areas of a cruder concrete finish.
