Tijuana is a city that has developed around different types of borders, both artificial, like the one with San Diego, and natural, like the ocean and mountains.
On a hilltop site, with an amazing view of the City, we found the opportunity to develop single family houses that Tijuana was lacking.
Having convinced the site owners of subdividing 10,000 sq. ft. plots into 3,000 sq. ft. ones, we designed and built 10 single family houses. Using the same construction methods and materials, our exercise was in figuring out different spatial configurations and applying some basic urbanism rules. One of our greatest achievements was building the houses without a wall in the back garden, which for security reasons, is something that most houses in Tijuana have. We developed simple rulesets, that every one of our designs followed, to create a sense of community, in a city that a lot of the times is lacking one.
