The Hayvenhurst Folie is a free-standing off the grid learning
laboratory for a young family. The free-standing structure is an
extension and result of the renovation of the mid-century modern
residence located in the Encino Foothills. After the completion of the
renovation of the mid-century modern residence, the owners’ requested
that the designers create a refuge and retreat for their children, a
world for creativity and learning. The Folie explores past and present
principles, while pondering notions of recurring themes prevalent in
architectural history. The end result is a Folie environment that
integrates ongoing modern themes of interior and exterior relationships,
exploring and teaching of sustainable principles at a local scale. The
free-standing structure is designed with a photovoltaic array, battery
operated, and complete with a monitoring system that will allow the
children to monitor their energy and water usage. The first phase will
permit the minimum, as the children grow, thus will the photovoltaic
system, it will accommodate usage. The end result is architecture to
embody educational tools that promote and instill design and sustainable
principles into society to carry on from generation to generation.
