A customer lounge facility incorporating new stairs, bridge and lifts to existing station platforms. Turning
necessity to virtue, the new building straddles the tracks and is designed to be lifted into place, minimising
disruption to trains and maintenance near overhead cables. The dynamic form develops from these
engineering imperatives together with aspirations to maximise natural light and attenuate the bulk of the
silhouette. Tight budget constraints are met by refining the design into a palette of components and typical
details for efficiency in fabrication and assembly. These include laser cut steel plate with recessed external
fillet welds, composite cladding panels rationalised to standard modules, curving profiled aluminium roofs
each discharging onto the next.
HEX chose an innovative procurement, using ECC Design & Build contract Option C negotiated target cost
but combined with a highly detailed design developed in collaboration with the contractor throughout.
