+Site: Situated on Suton Street, in the village of Suton. The site is unused low grade paddock, covered in rough pasture grass surrounded by hedges and open countryside.
+Brief: To create a new build 5 bedroom house, built to code level 6 sustainability, with parking for 2 cars, and a corresponding landscape scheme sympathethic to the area.
+Design Approach: It is the intention that this is not just a building, but a design which the village can be proud of and enhances the natural landscape. This design is a sensative response to the landscape in its choice of material, its complimenting form, its position within the site, and the overall design. It enhances and enriches the site for future generations to enjoy. This is a gentle design that has been created to grow with the surrounding countryside.
+Design: Studio Urbanblu have designed a house which has been inspired by its location. Lacking an architectural vernacular reference, we have instead used the surrounding countryside as its inspiration. The South Norfolk Place-Making Guide refers to the landscape being an important feature of this area and we have considered this within the deisgn by ensuring that the scheme did not impact on the skyline views and maintaining a sense of openness across the site. We wanted to introduce a material appropirate to the location, but also to explore the possibilities of Straw Bale in a contemporary design using glass and steel.
+The design included the following innovations:
Inspired by the rough grassed landscape of the location, this design showcases both modern and traditional architectural uses of straw. One part of the scheme is made from straw bales built upon a masonry plinth wall using the traditional Nebraska method. Many straw houses built this way often have a childlike quality to them; to temper this characteristic and give a contemporary feel tot he design, the windows have been cut out in a staggered fashion. The other part f the scheme combines modern engineering with straw to create a steel umbrella-like structure with a freeform canopy of thatch coveringa glass open-planned living space.
+The scheme helps raise standards of design in rural areas:
This design raises the bar in architecture in this area of South Norfolk where the original character has been severely eroded by modern estate type development. rather than create a design which corresponds to a traditional South Norfolk vernacular style which is no longer strongly evident in Suton, Studio Urbanblu's design pays homage to the open rural landscape of this locality in a sculptural way. These qualities make the house appear to have grown out of the landscape, therby belonging to the landscape.
+The design reflects the highest standards in architecture:
This is a balanced, elegant design which was designed with the clients close involvement throughout. It incorporates and realises current views on "homes for life". The house can expand and contract as our clients lives change, catering for young and old; for work and pleasure; abled and disabled. A practical energy plan for the house uses all the best and current energy genrating practices and conservation principles, using local materials and skills, and collaboration with an engineer from the onset of the design.
