The basis for the design was an existing mansion and barn surrounded by a vast garden with old trees. The idea was to add a third building and thus design a protected and intimate courtyard with two huge old trees – a lime tree and a chestnut-tree – in its centre.
The rest of the garden can be entered through a small passage that gives way onto a breath-taking panorama: a hilly landscape of the Wiener Wald.
The idea of alternating between intimate and open space in the garden is mirrored in the interior spaces. The mansion’s interior is arranged in three areas. The middle part of the building is the core around which all the other areas of the house are situated. This core houses a living room with an open kitchen, a bathroom, a staircase and some secondary rooms.
Through a large opening from the living area one enters the veranda (covered by a porch roof) that links the guesthouse to the mansion. The veranda opens towards the garden and a pool, extending the living area of the house, which includes an out-door kitchen for the summer.
The choice of materials for the exterior and interior finishing are all natural: stone, stucco and wood. The precision with which these materials have been joined and the harmonious integration of the overall design of the project creates an atmospheric variety.
