Desciption of the façade redevelopment
The building „Haus 11“, used as a lecture hall- building with lecture rooms, offices and bureaus, had several damages in its structural physics before the renovation.
Other than that the buildings appearance seemed very untended and neglected.
During a scientific research where detailed scientific studies about the behavior of wood- curtain-facades were done, Andreas Gehrke conducted the restoration of the façade.
Using Photovoltaik- modules and integrating them into the façade, the building now has an annual energy consumption of less than 40% of what is allowed after the new Energy Saving Ordinance for New Buildings.
Furthermore, Andreas Gehrke developed a complete new outside look of the building, a new aesthetic in the façade which is completely different to the old façade. The oversized building with its monotone grid was now dissolved into an ensemble of several building structures and is relativized in its expanding effect to its environment. The expressive upper part of the building has now a bent structure made of untreated wood (Lärche) which structures the building in its length and brings new life to its silhouette.
Also the design of the forest side, the northern and eastern façade, is now dissolved into its elements and makes the huge building look more defined. For the visitors view, coming from the forest side, the WDVS façade (heat insulation system) welcomes the visitor with a cheerful play of colors arranged on this side of the building. Hence the building is aesthetically increased also on this side.
